EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO OVERCOME RISKS – NGOMBEZI SECONDARY SCHOOL, KOROGWE, TANGA
Investing in young people today is investing in stronger families, safer communities, and a better future.
This week, Beyond Four Walls is working with students at Ngombezi and Semkiwa Secondary Schools in Korogwe, Tanga, through a participatory capacity-building program designed to help young people recognize risks, make informed decisions, build confidence, and protect their future.
Rather than simply telling students what to do, we create a safe environment where they can ask questions, discuss real-life challenges, identify solutions, and develop practical skills they can use in everyday life.
One important discussion focused on:
What should a student do when pressured to engage in sexual activities?
Students identified practical steps they can take:
BE CONFIDENT AND SAY NO – Have the courage to set boundaries and refuse unwanted sexual pressure.
CHANGE THE SUBJECT OR LEAVE – Remove yourself from situations that may put you at risk.
SEEK HELP – Speak with a trusted parent, teacher, counselor, or responsible adult.
BLOCK AND REPORT ONLINE – Do not tolerate online harassment, pressure, threats, or exploitation. Dangerous situations should never be hidden.

Young people face many pressures that can affect their education, relationships, health, safety, and future opportunities. Early, practical, and participatory education can equip them with the confidence and skills needed to respond positively before risks become crises.
At Beyond Four Walls, we believe that vulnerable children and young people should not simply be protected from risks—they should be equipped to recognize risks, make wise choices, develop resilience, and become agents of positive change in their families and communities.
