Capacity Building for Semkiwa Secondary School Students
Equipping Young People to Protect Their Education, Well-Being, and Future
At Semkiwa Secondary School, Beyond Four Walls conducted a practical capacity-building session designed to help students recognize and overcome risks associated with mobile phone misuse, unhealthy relationships, peer pressure, and poor decision-making.
For many young people, these challenges can quietly undermine their education, relationships, confidence, and future opportunities. Our approach goes beyond simply warning students about risks. We equip them with practical knowledge, decision-making skills, confidence, and personal commitments that they can apply in everyday life.
Turning Awareness into Action
Students examined how irresponsible mobile phone use can affect their education. Through discussion, they identified that excessive phone use can:
- Reduce time available for study and self-learning.
- Weaken concentration and attentiveness during lessons.
- Cause tiredness when phones are used late at night.
- Contribute to declining examination performance.
- Interrupt homework and study through constant notifications.
- Shift valuable time from learning to excessive entertainment.
Importantly, the session moved from awareness to personal responsibility. Students made their own commitments and repeated:
“Starting today, I will…”
- Protect my study time.
- Think carefully before making important decisions.
- Resist harmful peer pressure.
- Respect my boundaries and those of others.
- Seek help when facing serious challenges.
- Choose friends who encourage me to do what is right.
- Use my phone responsibly.
The Change We Want to See
Our goal is not simply to conduct training sessions. We want to see young people better equipped to make choices that protect their education, relationships, dignity, and future opportunities.
The students left with three simple but powerful messages:
1. Do not let your phone control your future.
2. Do not trade your future for short-term pleasure or pressure.
3. Do not allow peer pressure to lead you into decisions whose consequences you may carry for years.
These simple commitments can become powerful protective factors when reinforced by parents, teachers, schools, communities, and supportive organizations.
Why Partnership Matters
This session illustrates the kind of preventive, participatory community investment that can help address challenges before they become more costly and difficult to reverse.
With additional support, Beyond Four Walls can expand this approach to more schools and communities, reaching young people with practical life skills and creating stronger networks of support around them.
We invite donors, development partners, schools, faith-based organizations, local institutions, and other stakeholders to partner with Beyond Four Walls in building communities that are better equipped to overcome vulnerability, dependency, and poverty.
Your partnership can help transform training into lasting capacity—equipping young people not merely to avoid risks, but to make informed choices, remain focused on their education, and build a healthier and more hopeful future.
Beyond Four Walls — building capacity, strengthening communities, and investing in people to create lasting change.
