THE DANGER OF LIVING SOMEONE ELSE’S LIFE
(Discover who God created you to be)
Our responsibility is not to become somebody else. Our responsibility is to discover who God created us to be and faithfully fulfill our assignment.
Main Scripture: Jeremiah 1:5–10 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”
1. YOU FAIL TO RECOGNIZE YOUR DIVINE ASSIGNMENT
Jesus knew exactly what He came to accomplish. Isaiah 61:1–3 describes His assignment: to preach good news, heal the brokenhearted, proclaim liberty to captives, and bring hope to those who mourn. Every one of us has an assignment.
If we do not understand our spiritual “job description,” we may spend our lives doing somebody else's work while neglecting our own.
We cannot fulfill an assignment we have never recognized.
2. YOU LOSE YOUR PURPOSE AND DIVINE AUTHORITY
Jeremiah was called before he was born. God told him, “I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”
Our purpose did not begin when we became successful, wealthy, educated, or even when we became Christians. God had a purpose for us before we understood it.
We should not spend our lives trying to become somebody else when God has already created us to fulfill our own assignment.
3. YOU CAN STEP OUTSIDE YOUR SPHERE OF AUTHORITY
Acts 19:13–16 gives us the account of the sons of Sceva who attempted to exercise authority over an evil spirit without possessing the appropriate spiritual authority.
The lesson is clear: we must know our spiritual boundaries.
4. YOU FAIL TO APPRECIATE WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN YOU
Peter looked at another disciple and asked Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?”
Jesus answered, “What is that to you? You follow Me.” — John 21:22.
Comparison can make us despise our own assignment.
We must stop measuring our calling by somebody else's calling.
5. YOU BECOME DEPENDENT INSTEAD OF DEVELOPING YOURSELF
Joshua was commanded repeatedly: “Be strong and courageous.” — Joshua 1:6–9.
God expected Joshua to step into his own responsibility and continue the work Moses had begun.
We should seek godly assistance, but we must also develop our own faith, discipline, courage, skills, and relationship with God.
6. YOU LOSE YOUR IDENTITY THROUGH COMPARISON
Paul warned against comparing ourselves with others. — 2 Corinthians 10:12–16.
God never called us to become copies of other people.
We are called to become everything God designed us to be.
We must know our sphere, respect the sphere of others, and faithfully work within the assignment God has given us.
7. YOU CAN ENDANGER YOUR LIVES BY GOING OUTSIDE GOD'S ASSIGNMENT
The material reminds us that stepping outside God's assignment can expose us to unnecessary danger.
This does not mean that every difficulty means we have missed God's will. Rather, it reminds us that we need discernment.
We should not allow pressure, competition, ambition, or imitation to send us where God has not sent us.
8. YOU MUST KNOW YOUR FINISH LINE
Paul said: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” — 2 Timothy 4:7.
Paul knew the scope of his ministry and remained committed to finishing his race.
We must know what God has called us to do, remain faithful to it, and refuse to waste our lives pursuing assignments that belong to somebody else.
CONCLUSION
We were not created to live somebody else's life.
We were created with a purpose.
We were given gifts, abilities, opportunities, and an assignment.
Therefore, let us stop comparing ourselves with others and start discovering what God has entrusted to us.
We do not need another person's life. We need to fulfill our own God-given life.
