DOING THE IMPOSSIBLE THROUGH GOD’S POWER

DOING THE IMPOSSIBLE THROUGH GOD’S POWER

(Weakness and background don’t limit God's power)

Main Text: Matthew 14:22–33

The story of Peter walking on water teaches us that supernatural experiences are not merely about miracles. They are about hearing God, trusting Him, stepping out in faith, keeping our eyes on Jesus, and allowing Him to strengthen us.

Today, God is calling somebody beyond the limits of human capability!

1. MAKE TIME FOR GOD EVEN WHEN YOU ARE BUSY

Matthew 14:22–23

Jesus had enormous responsibilities, yet He deliberately withdrew to pray. “He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray.”

Busyness is not an excuse for neglecting God.

If you become too busy to pray, you become too weak to face the battles ahead.

Jesus understood that public ministry must flow from private fellowship with God.

Before you face people, face God.

Before you confront the storm, enter the presence of God.

Before you attempt great things, receive strength from above.

The emphasis is that

Some battles cannot be defeated by intelligence.

Some doors cannot be opened by connections.

Some assignments cannot be accomplished by human strength.

You need power from on high!

2. UNDERSTAND THAT YOUR FAITH WILL SOMETIMES BE TESTED

Matthew 14:24–25

The disciples were in the middle of the sea, and the wind was against them.

Notice something: Jesus knew they were struggling.

Their struggle did not mean Jesus had abandoned them.

Sometimes you can be in the will of God and still encounter a storm.

Sometimes you can pray and still face opposition.

Sometimes you can obey God and still experience resistance.

The storm is not always evidence that you are in the wrong place.

The disciples were struggling, but Jesus was coming.

Your storm has an expiration date!

The Lord sees you even when you cannot see Him.

3. DON'T LIMIT GOD TO WHAT YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED BEFORE

Matthew 14:26

When the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water, they became afraid.

Why? Because they had never seen Jesus come to them that way before.

Sometimes we become afraid when God works differently from what we are accustomed to.

We know God as the God who works on the land—but suddenly He is walking on the water!

God is not limited to your previous experience.

Don't tell God: “That's not how You have done it before.”

The God who performed yesterday's miracle can reveal another dimension of His power today.

Ask the Holy Spirit to give you spiritual discernment so that you can recognize God's work even when it comes in an unfamiliar way.

4. LEARN TO RECOGNIZE THE VOICE OF JESUS

Matthew 14:27

Jesus said: “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”

The disciples had to distinguish the voice of Jesus from the noise of the storm.

There were waves, wind, darkness, fear, uncertainty.

But Jesus was speaking.

Today there are many voices competing for your attention.

The voice of fear, people, culture, failure, disappointment, temptation.

But you must learn to recognize the voice of Jesus.

5. PRAY PRAYERS THAT REQUIRE FAITH

Matthew 14:28

Peter did not merely say, “Lord, help me.”

He said: “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”

Peter's prayer contained an assignment.

He was asking Jesus to call him into something beyond ordinary human ability.

Some prayers require no action:

“Lord, bless me.” “Lord, help me.” “Lord, open doors.”

But some prayers demand a response:

“Lord, show me what I must do.”

Faith is not passive.

When God gives you an instruction, your responsibility is to respond.

6. WHEN JESUS SAYS “COME,” GET OUT OF THE BOAT

Matthew 14:29

Jesus said one word: “Come.” Peter had a choice.

He could remain in the boat with the other disciples and remain safe.

Or he could step into the impossible. Peter stepped out!

The boat represents the place of comfort, familiarity, and human security.

Sometimes God is calling you beyond your comfort zone.

You have prayed. You have heard. You have received direction.

Now you must act.

Don't allow everybody's opinion to cancel what God has instructed you to do.

When you are convinced that something is God's will, take the step of faith.

7. KEEP YOUR EYES ON JESUS

Matthew 14:30

Peter was walking on water.

That means the impossible had become possible.

But then he looked at the wind. And he began to sink.

The problem was not that the wind suddenly appeared.

The wind was already there when Peter stepped out.

What changed was his focus. As long as he focused on Jesus, he walked. When he focused on the storm, fear entered.

Remember: Faith looks at Jesus. Fear looks at the storm.

Don't allow your circumstances to become bigger than your God.

Don't focus more on:

  • the debt than on God,

  • the opposition than on God,

  • the sickness than on God,

  • the closed door than on God,

  • the failure than on God.

Keep your eyes on Jesus!

8. WHEN YOU BEGIN TO SINK, CRY OUT TO JESUS

Matthew 14:30

Peter made a short prayer: “Lord, save me!”

It was enough.

You don't need a long theological speech when you are drowning.

Call upon Jesus!

Don't wait until every human solution has failed. Don't put Jesus last.

When trouble comes, call on Him first.

When you are sinking: “Jesus, save me!”

When your family is sinking: “Jesus, save us!”

When your ministry is sinking: “Jesus, help me!”

When your finances are sinking: “Jesus, intervene!”

The Lord is able to save.

9. JESUS WILL HOLD YOU, BUT HE WANTS TO STRENGTHEN YOU TO WALK

Matthew 14:31

Jesus stretched out His hand and caught Peter.

But notice something important: Jesus did not carry Peter back to the boat like luggage.

He caught him and dealt with his faith.

God wants to help you, but He also wants to develop you.

There are believers who continually depend on somebody else's prayers but never develop their own prayer life.

They depend on the pastor.

They depend on the prophet.

They depend on another believer.

But God wants you to grow.

The five-fold ministry exists to equip the saints for the work of ministry, not to replace their responsibility.

“God is not only going to carry you; He is going to strengthen you!”

10. YOUR IMPOSSIBLE PLACE CAN BECOME YOUR TESTIMONY

Peter stepped onto water that was never designed to carry human beings.

But when Jesus gave the command, Peter experienced something beyond natural ability.

That is the power of divine enablement.

You may be facing something today that looks impossible.

But don't measure the assignment only by your ability.

Ask: “Has God called me?”

If He has called you, He will give you grace to obey Him.

Your weakness does not limit God's power.

Your background does not limit God's purpose.

Your past does not cancel God's calling.

Your current circumstances do not determine your final testimony.

God can take you beyond what human ability can accomplish.
