Is Our Faith Losing Its Power?
(Faith isn’t just intellectual; it’s experiential!)
Main text: Acts 2:36-47.
The early church serves as a vital model for modern congregations.
1. The Heart of the Message was Christ, Not a Religion (Verse 36)
They didn’t come to offer a new system of belief, a complex theology to learn. They boldly proclaimed – “This Jesus, whom you crucified, is both Lord and Christ!” They didn’t preach to people; they proclaimed the truth about Jesus, the man who died for our sins and rose again to reign.
2. The Word penetrated the soul, but today we depend on persuasive words (Verse 37)
The early church didn’t depend on marketing techniques or persuasive arguments. When Peter spoke, the Word of God didn't just land on ears. People were broken and asked, “What shall we do, brothers?”
3. Authentic Repentance, Not Manipulation (Verse 38)
They weren't manipulated. They weren't coerced. The people chose to repent. It was a heartfelt turning away from sin, a genuine desire to follow Jesus. And Peter offered them the path – baptism, the reception of the Holy Spirit
4. Living Testimony and not Just quoting Scripture
The early church didn't just quote Old Testament Scripture. They testified with living experiences! They demonstrated the power of God through miracles and signs! Faith isn’t just intellectual; it’s experiential! It’s about knowing God's power in our lives, and sharing that power with others.
5. They had a Deeper Love for the Word, Fellowship, and Prayer (Verse 42), not just entertainment
The early church didn’t prioritize entertaining services. They treasured the Word, they fostered deep fellowship with one another, and they spent time in constant prayer. We need to cultivate a genuine love for what truly nourishes our souls!
6. Seeking the Lost, Not Just Inviting Them to Worship Services (Verse 39 & 40)
They didn’t just invite people to the temple. They actively sought out those lost and confused, those who needed to hear the Good News. They reached into the “perverse generation” and offered them the grace of God.
7. Engaged with the World (Verse 44 & 47) instead of hiding away.
They weren't isolated in their faith. They were welcomed into the community; they shared their possessions and earned everyone's favor. We must strive to be the salt and light of the world, demonstrating God’s love and grace in our daily lives.
